Error Codes
Meanings, severity levels, safe checks you can perform, and when to call a technician.
Enter the code shown on your dryer display
Is it safe to keep using it?
Depends on code severity. Low/Medium codes often allow continued use, High severity requires immediate stop.
Can error codes be reset?
Some codes clear after power cycle. Persistent codes indicate underlying issues needing repair.
When should I stop using it?
Stop immediately for water leak codes, burning smell, or any High severity error.

Code
Meaning
Severity
Common Symptom
AF
Restricted Airflow / Vent Blockage
High
The control board halts or significantly lengthens the drying cycle and flashes AF on the display — or shows "Check Vent" on models with text displays — to alert the user that exhaust airflow has dropped below the minimum threshold for safe operation.
View
F01
Main Electronic Control Board Failure
Medium
The control board locks out all cycle starts when F01 is active. Selecting a cycle and pressing Start does nothing, or the dryer briefly tumbles then stops and redisplays F01 within seconds.
View
F06
Drive Motor Tachometer Error
High
The motor attempts to start when the cycle begins, but because the control board receives no valid tachometer feedback within the first few seconds of operation, it shuts the motor off and displays F06.
View
F22
Exhaust Thermistor (Outlet Temperature Sensor) Fault
High
The control board halts heating — and sometimes the entire cycle — when F22 is active because it cannot verify exhaust temperature is within safe limits. The drum may continue to tumble with no heat, or the dryer may abort the cycle entirely.
View
F26
Door Switch Fault
Medium
The control board sees an open door switch circuit and refuses to start the motor or heater. Pressing Start results in F26 displaying without any drum movement.
View
F28
Moisture Sensor Strip Fault
Medium
If the moisture sensor circuit reads as a short (very low resistance), the board interprets it as the load being bone-dry before the cycle has run long enough, stopping the dryer prematurely and leaving clothes damp.
View
F30
Restricted Airflow Detected — Blocked Lint Screen or Duct
High
The control board detects inadequate exhaust airflow through thermistor temperature differential monitoring and displays F30. On some Kenmore models the code appears at the end of a cycle; on others it halts the cycle mid-run.
View
F70
No Communication Between Main and User Interface Boards
Medium
With no communication link to the UI board, the main board cannot receive cycle selections or Start commands — the dryer is completely locked out from operation and no cycle can be started.
View
L2
Low or No L2 Voltage on Heater Circuit (Electric Dryers)
High
Because the motor and control board run on L1 alone, the dryer starts, the drum tumbles, and the timer advances — but without L2, the 240 V heating element never reaches operating temperature and the exhaust air stays at room temperature.
View
PF
Power Failure — Cycle Interrupted
Low
The dryer displays PF immediately upon power restoration and does not resume the interrupted cycle automatically — it waits for user input before restarting.
