Kenmore dehumidifier fire recall 2001 — On April 19, 2001, CPSC and LG Electronics Inc. announced a voluntary recall (CPSC #01-130) of approximately 100,000 Goldstar, General Electric, and Sears Kenmore portable dehumidifiers. An internal electrical connection could overheat, presenting a fire hazard.

Why this matters

The internal wiring connection inside the dehumidifier compressor housing could overheat, causing the unit to smoke and catch fire. LG Electronics received seven reports of overheating incidents before the recall, including four reports of fire within units with smoke damage to surrounding furniture and flooring.

  • Sears Kenmore model 580.59600890 (60-pint)
  • Manufactured between November 1998 and May 1999
  • Sold at Sears stores nationwide
  • Approximately 100,000 total units across all three brand names (Goldstar, GE, Kenmore)

How to identify

Model and serial numbers are on a label on the back of the dehumidifier. Kenmore model 580.59600890 with serial numbers in the manufacturing window is the affected Sears unit. The Kenmore logo appears on the front of the unit.

Recommended action steps

  1. Stop using the dehumidifier immediately
  2. Contact LG Electronics toll-free at 1-800-243-0000 for current recall status and remedy information
  3. Do not store or use the unit in enclosed spaces (basements, closets) where undetected fire could spread rapidly
  4. Free repair was the remedy at time of recall announcement
