Kenmore Elite Gas Dryer Fire Recall 2012 | CPSC #12-251

Kenmore Elite gas dryer fire recall 2012 — On August 21, 2012, CPSC, LG Electronics, and Sears announced voluntary recall #12-251 covering approximately 21,000 Kenmore Elite and LG gas dryers. The gas valve could fail to shut off after the drying cycle, continuing to heat the drum and posing a fire, burn, and smoke inhalation hazard.

Why this matters

When the gas valve failed to close at cycle end, the dryer continued heating its contents even after the drum stopped. LG and Sears received 141 consumer complaints about dryers that continued heating after the cycle, including over 50 reports of scorched or burnt clothing and 3 reports of minor burns to hands or arms from touching overheated dryer components.
