Kenmore Elite smoothtop electric range fire recall 2009 — In August 2009, CPSC and Frigidaire (Electrolux) announced recall #09-333 covering approximately 200,000 Frigidaire and Kenmore Elite smooth-top electric ranges. Surface heating elements could turn on spontaneously, fail to turn off, or heat to different temperatures than selected — posing fire and burn hazards. This recall was reannounced in May 2024 due to continued incidents and low consumer response.
Why this matters
The potentiometer (rotary knob control) on affected ranges could malfunction, causing heating elements to activate without input, refuse to shut off, or reach unintended temperatures. As of the 2024 reannouncement, Electrolux had received at least 212 incident reports, including 14 fires and 8 injuries — burns to hands and arms plus smoke inhalation.
Affected models
- Kenmore Elite smooth-top electric ranges: models beginning with 790.99012, 790.99013, 790.99014, 790.99019
- Serial number range VF122xxxxx through VF334xxxxx
- Sold at Sears and other national retailers from June 2001 through August 2009 for approximately from $1,000
- Approximately 200,000 total units (Frigidaire and Kenmore combined)
How to identify
Model and serial numbers are on a label behind the range drawer (bottom) or on the back panel. Range has rear-mounted rotary knobs and a digital display. Check your model prefix against the 790.99012/013/014/019 series.
Recommended action steps
- If elements activate without being switched on, turn off the range at the circuit breaker immediately
- Contact Electrolux toll-free at 1-888-845-8226 Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, or visit www.potentiometerrecall.com
- If range is repairable, a free inspection and repair will be scheduled; if not repairable, a $50 electronic gift card plus up to $60 haul-away reimbursement will be provided
- Do not leave the range unattended and consider turning it off at the breaker between uses until repaired
