Kenmore Washer F21 Error: Long Drain — Water Not Pumping Out

The kenmore washer f21 error is a fault signal from the control board — this guide walks through what it means, common causes, and safe diagnostic steps. What Does Kenmore Washer Error Code F21 Mean? F21 on a Kenmore Elite HE front-load washer means the machine took too long to drain — the control board […]

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. An F21 washer has standing water in the drum and cannot complete any wash or spin cycle. Running additional cycles forces the pump motor to labor against a blockage or strain with standing water, which can burn out the motor. Empty and repair the washer before using it.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. F21 clears automatically once the drain pump successfully removes water. After cleaning the filter and inspecting the hose, run a Drain and Spin cycle. If drainage completes within the time limit, F21 will not return. If the pump has failed, F21 returns on every drain attempt regardless of resets.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Standing water remains in the drum after cleaning the filter and checking the hose, F21 returns on every Drain and Spin attempt after the filter is confirmed clean.

Symptoms You May Notice

Standing water visible in the drum at cycle end

The tub fails to empty and wet laundry sits in pooled water. Opening the door (after the door lock releases) reveals a drum still holding several inches of water.

F21 displayed mid-cycle with washer paused

The Kenmore Elite stops, displays F21 on its seven-segment panel, and locks the door until the pump clears enough water to release the lock — sometimes taking several minutes.

Humming or no sound from the pump area during drain phase

A clogged pump impeller produces a low hum as the motor strains against the obstruction; a completely seized pump produces silence where the normal pump whir should be heard.

Puddle of water forming on the floor in front of the washer

With the tub unable to drain through the pump, residual water seeps out past the door gasket or overflow path and pools on the floor once the cycle halts with laundry still submerged.

Possible Causes

1

Clogged drain pump filter or coin trap

Kenmore Elite front-loaders have a clean-out filter behind the lower front access panel. Coins, hair ties, lint, and small garment items accumulate there and restrict flow to the point the pump cannot drain within the time limit.

DIY Possible
2

Kinked or obstructed drain hose

The drain hose routed behind the washer has been kinked against the wall, or a sock or small item has lodged in the standpipe, creating enough back-pressure to trigger F21 without a true pump failure.

DIY Possible
3

Failed drain pump motor

The pump impeller or motor windings have failed. The pump does not move water even with the filter clean and hose unobstructed. This is the second most common hardware failure after filter blockage on Kenmore Elite HE front-loaders.

DIY Possible
4

Control board drain relay failure

The main electronic control board fails to energize the drain pump relay, so the pump never receives power. The pump itself is functional but receives no signal.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Clean the drain pump filter

Unplug the washer. Locate the small access door at the bottom front of the Kenmore Elite cabinet (usually held by a snap tab or single screw). Place towels and a shallow pan beneath it — water will flow out. Unscrew the filter cap counter-clockwise slowly to drain residual water, then pull the filter straight out. Remove all debris: coins, hairpins, lint, and small fabric items are typical. Rinse the filter under running water, reinsert it, and tighten the cap firmly clockwise.

Kenmore recommends cleaning this filter every 1–3 months on HE front-loaders. A filter that has never been cleaned will be heavily packed with lint and may require soaking in warm water to fully clear.

  2. 2

Inspect the drain hose at the standpipe

Pull the washer away from the wall and trace the corrugated drain hose to the standpipe or utility sink. Look for kinks — the hose should not make any bend tighter than 6 inches in radius. Also confirm the hose end is inserted no more than 8 inches into the standpipe to prevent siphoning. If the hose is clear, run a Rinse and Spin cycle to confirm drainage.

The drain hose end should be secured to the standpipe but not inserted so deeply that it creates an airtight seal — an airtight seal causes a siphon that continuously re-fills the tub and triggers F21 even with a functioning pump.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • No continuity across the drain pump motor windings — pump has failed electrically
  • Pump receives correct voltage at its connector but impeller does not spin — internal mechanical failure
  • F21 returns immediately after filter cleaning, hose is clear, and pump runs — indicates main control board drain relay failure
